Victor and his motorcycle (1960)
Before WWII, there was a prohibition of importing of motor vehicles including motorcycles to China at the time. Alfred had a 1937 Harley-Davidson broken down and shipped to Shanghai as parts and had it reassembled there. Maybe that should qualify as the first "Made in China'' labeled Harley. LOL. I rode on it behind Willie in Kowloon. It had a hand gear shift and a foot controlled clutch.
Now I also better understand why my parents let me buy a used 500cc Norton and had it restored. It wasn't their first time and there was pressure in not denying it to a later born the same thing. Hmmm. I had it painted red.

Mayor Victor
A painting of Victor when he was Mayor of the of the Canton Pavilion in 1976
I was 5 years old and attended many events at this pavilion, which was part of a large festival to celebrate multiculturalism, called CARAVAN. One of the events was a kind of parade of traditional clothing worn by people of different ethnicities in China. I seemed to have a fascination with fans. My dad was carrying one when it was his turn to sashay down the middle of the large gymnasium turned reception hall. I had no idea he was in a 'show'. I just say my dad carrying a fan. And I wanted that fan! I ran to him and jumped up to grab it. Every time I jumped, he lifted his hand and the fan escaped my grip. In no time I heard a chorus of laughter -- at me! I immediately stopped jumping up and skulked away! Apart from that extremely embarassing moment, I really enjoyed the festival.
