William with his car, a Hudson. Actually, the car was owned 50% each between William and Elaine. Elaine would use it during the week, and William would use it during the weekends.

Typically, students at DBS came from one of two backgrounds, from well-to-do families like the Sim family, or as orphans, including children born to British soldiers and Chinese mothers during WW2. William and all the other DBS students would share everything, including their underwear with orphaned students.
William developed some life-long friendships with his classmates at DBS, all of whom became very successful. He has been getting together with his DBS friends every year for a class reunion over the last several years. His very best friend is Horace Knight, who was one of the orphaned children, who later became president of Imperial College in London, and to this day, they speak frequently on the phone. I have never seen my father more in his element than when he is with his DBS classmates.
It takes all day by boat to travel from Swatow (Shantou) to Hong Kong. Therefore, William could not go home like other students whose families resided in Hong Kong. William would often go to stay with Stephen King, Charlotte King's eldest brother. Stephen King would treat William as one of his children. Stephen King was very successful and had many fancy cars that he freely permitted William to drive. Stephen King also allowed William to throw a house party with his classmates in his house.
